An Eye for Visual Communications

The Eye of My Brand

Creating a brand identity for my personal design studio was a unique challenge. The goal was simple yet profound: the logo needed to reflect something distinctly personal—my right eye. Yes, there's a story behind it, but that's for another day. This project was all about capturing the essence of that feature and transforming it into a symbol that represents me and my work.

A Circle, but Not Just Any Circle

The shape of the eye is inherently complex, but I didn't want my logo to be an obvious eye. Instead, I used circles—three, to be exact. These circles represent the sclera, pupil, and cornea. The largest circle represents the sclera, the middle one placed off-center to the left is the cornea, and the smallest, represents the pupil. This arrangement creates an abstract image reminiscent of two crescent moons, a subtle nod to the eye without being overt.

The decision to use circles was deliberate. Circles are a universal symbol of wholeness, infinity, and focus, which align perfectly with my personal and professional ethos. The concentric arrangement of the circles, with the smallest circle offset, adds a dynamic element, suggesting movement and depth, much like the human eye itself.

The Colorful World of Grayscale

When it comes to colors, I wanted my brand to be versatile, able to encompass every possible hue my clients might desire. How do you achieve that? By focusing on the extremes: black and white, and everything in between. Shades of gray became the palette, representing the entire spectrum in a minimalistic yet profound way.

White represents the combination of all colors, while black represents the absence of color. This stark contrast creates a powerful foundation for the brand, allowing it to be both bold and adaptable. The use of grayscale ensures that the logo remains neutral, making it easy to overlay on any background or pair with any color scheme without clashing.

The Timeless Elegance of Fauna One

For typography, I chose Fauna One, a serif font that combines elegance with modernity. This typeface complements the simplicity of the logo while adding a touch of timeless sophistication. Its single weight ensures clarity and simplicity, vital for a brand that aims to support and not overshadow my work.

Fauna One is a serif font that manages to strike a balance between classic and contemporary design. Its clean lines and gentle curves make it highly legible, which is crucial for branding. The choice of a serif font also conveys a sense of tradition and reliability, which I wanted to infuse into my personal brand. Despite being a serif, Fauna One has a modern feel, making it versatile for both print and digital media.

Perfect Proportions

Incorporating the golden ratio was non-negotiable for me. This proportion, revered for its aesthetic perfection, finds its place in my logo, making the design both harmonious and pleasing to the eye.

The golden ratio, approximately 1.618, is a mathematical ratio found in nature, art, and architecture, known for its aesthetically pleasing properties. By incorporating this ratio into the spacing and sizing of the circles, the logo gains a natural balance and elegance, creating a sense of visual harmony that draws the viewer in.

The Essence of Simplicity

The choice of black and white, encompassing all colors and their absence, allows my brand to adapt seamlessly to any project. The simplicity of the logo means it can be easily coded in CSS, ensuring consistency across digital platforms. This minimalist approach ensures that my logo remains unobtrusive, letting my design work take center stage.

Simplicity was a key principle in the design process. A minimalistic logo ensures that it is scalable and versatile, looking great on everything from business cards to large-format prints. By avoiding complex details, the logo remains clear and impactful at any size. Additionally, the lack of color means that the logo can be used on any background without losing its identity, making it highly adaptable for various applications.

Adding Colors Using White Space

What if I need to use colors for my logo, you ask? The beauty of a minimalistic design is in its flexibility. I can always incorporate color through the strategic use of white space.

This technique creates depth and boldness, allowing the logo to adapt to various contexts and applications without losing its core identity. By leveraging the negative space, the logo gains an added dimension, making it even more dynamic and versatile.

I also did not tie my identity to one or sets of colors. When represented in colors, I make sure I well represented my projects design and will only allow my personal logo to support the project.

Reflecting on the Outcome

Creating a logo is a deeply personal endeavor, especially when it’s for oneself. There’s no right or wrong answer, only what feels true to you. My logo, with its abstract nod to my right eye, helps identify my unique visual perspective. It supports my identity as a visual strategist, someone who sees and interprets the world through a distinct lens.

Your logo should not just represent you; it should tell your unique story & capture the essence of who you are.

The process of designing this logo was a journey of self-discovery. It pushed me to think about what truly represents me and how I want to be perceived. The end result is a logo that not only symbolizes my personal identity but also embodies my design philosophy. It's a mark that tells a story, captures attention, and stays memorable.

Logo marks should help us identify one's entity and portray our role in society. As a visual strategist, I have an eye for design—literally and figuratively. I want my logo to support the designs I create, it should not add extra weight to the challenges every project we face.

So, do you have a personal identity or symbol that defines you? How does it connect to your brand and your story? I’d love to hear about it! Share your symbols and stories, and let's celebrate the unique marks that define who we are.
